The Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies by its enabling Act has a mandate to run postgraduate courses in Legislative Drafting. Consequently, the Akinola Aguda School of Post Graduate Studies was established in 1997. The school, named after the first Director General of the Institute, the late Dr Akinola Aguda, currently runs Postgraduate Diploma (PGD), Masters Degree (LL M) and PhD programmes in Legislative Drafting. In December 2013, the School graduated its first Ph D students. The School has over 30 faculty members either teaching at postgraduate level or offering Ph D supervision. The faculty members are experts in their specialised areas of law ranging from Legislative Drafting to Constitutional Law, Administrative Law and Environmental Law, among others.
They provide high quality teaching and internationally renowned research in addition to providing advice and acting as consultants to the Federal and State governments as well as international Institutions. Students also benefit from tutorship from the Institute’s brilliant research fellows who provide a one on one interactive learning environment outside the classroom. Students can also avail themselves the opportunity of publishing their well researched articles in any of the Institute’s peer reviewed journals. The Akinola Aguda School of Postgraduate Studies provides the necessary tools for students who wish to start a career in the academia or to develop relevant skills for practice.
The Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS) was established in 1979 as the leading Institution for advanced studies and research in law in Nigeria.
In 1997, the Institute introduced a carefully structured Postgraduate Diploma Course in Legislative Drafting (PGDLD) As a result of the success of this pilot scheme, the Masters Degree programme in Legislative Drafting (LL M) was introduced in 1999 to run alongside the Diploma course and in 2010 the Ph D in Legislative Drafting was equally introduced. Institutions, therefore, have the option of sponsoring students for any of the courses, depending on logistics and other relevant considerations. The LL M is as should be expected, substantially more enhanced and deeper in coverage than the diploma programme.
Please go to the individual course page you want to apply for, and you will find the relevant application form under the 'Apply Online'. Forms are also obtainable from our Lagos or Abuja office.
