The event was to disseminate the report on the Research Carried out by the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS) in Collaboration with Nigeria Stability and Reconciliation Programme (NSRP) on Justice, Reconciliation and Healing in the North East of Nigeria termed “DEALING WITH THE PAST”.

The research as carried out between February and April 2017 in Borno and Yobe states respectively particularly because both states recorded more casualties from insurgencies. The reason for the event is to ensure that the findings of research are made available to the key decision actors. Especially those that provide demand functions and also supply functions. It is hoped that the research will encourage learning amongst institutionsand that the relevant government institutions and security agencies will take note of this research and see how to help not only in the north east but in other parts of Nigeria.

Some of the highlights of report are; youth unemployment as one of the key causes of violence in Nigeria, National and state Emergency Services should to establish a clearer Emergency Policy framework setting out the duties and responsibilities of each tier of government towards providing support to ensure effective coordination, State Agencies should empower traditional justice systems to address minor grievances before they escalate; for non-governmental organisations to continue in the provision of business skills, psychological support through counselling, education and safe space program for peer-to- interaction to improve the ability of affected persons to earn a living and start saving for the future; for international organisations particularly providers of humanitarian and relief services to assist in the raising of funds to address specific needs of the people of the North-East; Provide comparative best practices on reconciliation and rehabilitation drawing from other regions etc.

The event had all the stakeholders from the justice sector in attendance such as, Law Reform Commission, Legal Aid Council, National Human Right Commission, NAPTIP, FIDA, IPAS Nigeria, Federal Ministry of Health, Federal Ministry of National Planning, Nigerian Military, Office of the National Security Adviser, Federal Ministry of Justice etc and NGO’S such as CLEEN Foundation, Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD).
