The African Bar Conference is an annual event held for lawyers all over Africa. The Theme of this years Conference is “Dissecting the Legal and Regulatory Frame Work For Doing Business in Africa and it remains relevant considering the myriad of challenges impeding ease of doing business in Africa such as human trafficking, bad governance, human rights abuses and absence of judicial independence. The conference recognised the fact that ‘A strong and independent judicial system is needed for business to thrive in Africa and therefore called for a stronger judicial system in Africa.

The event was to disseminate the report on the Research Carried out by the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS) in Collaboration with Nigeria Stability and Reconciliation Programme (NSRP) on Justice, Reconciliation and Healing in the North East of Nigeria termed “DEALING WITH THE PAST”.

The research as carried out between February and April 2017 in Borno and Yobe states respectively particularly because both states recorded more casualties from insurgencies. The reason for the event is to ensure that the findings of research are made available to the key decision actors. Especially those that provide demand functions and also supply functions. It is hoped that the research will encourage learning amongst institutionsand that the relevant government institutions and security agencies will take note of this research and see how to help not only in the north east but in other parts of Nigeria.

The Management of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies has maintained its commitment  to staff welfare. The Director-General, Professor Adedeji Adekunle, demonstrated this on Thursday August 31, 2017 by providing bags of rice and gallons of vegetable oil to felicitate with Muslim faithful working at the Institute to Mark Eidel- Kabir Ceremony.

The above gesture has been consistent since he assumed office as the Director-General of the Institute.

Professor Bolaji Owasanoye, former the Director of Research and Taslim Elias Distinguished Professor of Law, NIALS has been appointed by the Acting President as the new Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).His appointment is for a period of five (5) years and will be confirmed by the Senate in due course.

Prior to his appointment, he was the Executive Secretary, Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption.

The Director-General, Management and Staff of NIALS congratulate Professor Owasanoye on his appointment and wish him a successful tenure.

Professor Oluyinka Omorogbe has been appointed the Honourable Attorney-General and Commissioner of Justice, Edo State.  She was sworn in on July 6, 2017 by the Governor of Edo State, Governor Godwin Obaseki.

She is an accomplished scholar and is a former Secretary to the Corporation and Legal Adviser, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) a position she held until July 2011 and a former Dean, Faculty of Law, University of Ibadan.
